You can Run but You can’t Hide from the Big Brother

It was through George Orwell’s classic novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” that the character of Big Brother became popular. While none of the people in his totalitarian state has seen him, Big Brother is in constant watch of all the Oceania inhabitants. He watches his people through surveillance cameras and they are constantly reminded that “Big Brother is watching you.” Some speculate that Big Brother is a real person while others believe that he is just a persona created by the totalitarian party ruling the state.

Said to be taken from the advertisements of Bennett for educational correspondence courses during the Second World War, the character of Big Brother has become a powerful idea today. Many people refer to a person as “Big Brother” if he keeps a watchful eye on the people he wants to control. On the other hand, “Little Brother” is the term for any factor that discreetly threatens a person’s privacy. Little Brother may be in the form of social networking websites or camera phones.

As an entertainment subject, Big Brother is recognized as an international show that has a similar presentation as Orwell’s novel. Selected people are invited to live in a house–called Big Brother’s house–for a few months and they are to be watched by viewers 24/7. Cameras are hidden around the house so that most of the guests’ actions may be seen.
