The Vintage Ocean’s Eleven

Classy. Suave. Fun. These describe the Rat Pack who played the Las Vegas casino robbers in the original Ocean’s Eleven. With Frank Sinatra starring as Danny Ocean, how can the movie be far from interesting?

Shot during the early mornings of Las Vegas, the original Ocean’s Eleven proved to be a hit heist film. It was directed by Lewis Milestone and with Sinatra were the other Rat Packers–Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, and Sammy Davis, Jr. Other characters in the movie were played by Angie Dickinson, Richard Conte, Cesar Romero, Henry Silva, Akim Tamiroff, Ilka Chase, Norman Fell, Buddy Lester, and Harry Wilson.

What made the movie popular is the fact that the Rat Pack played the main roles and that the plot of the movie is witty. More than that, there were interesting cameo appearances by Shirley MacLaine, George Raft, and Red Skelton.

Today, Ocean’s Eleven is made famous by the eye-candy and talented actors George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. The other actors that made the film successful are Julia Roberts, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Shaobo Qin, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle, Carl Reiner, Ellie Gould, Eddie Jemison, and Andy Garcia. In addition, both the original and the remake movies are dubbed as VH1’s best Vegas movies in 2007.

Coca-Cola in the Beginning

Invented by John Pemberton in the 19th century, the Coca-Cola soft drink everyone knows today was made originally as a patent medicine for various health conditions. The Coca-Cola syrup, in particular, is a popular medicine against dyspepsia, headache, impotence, morphine addiction, and neurasthenia to name a few. The drink was initially sold for five cents per glass and were poured from soda fountains. In fact, Coca-Cola in bottles only came out during 1894.

Coca-cola’s first name is cocawine and is said to have been inspired from the cocawine Vin Mariani of European Angelo Mariani. Coca-cola was already popular for its health claims but became even more popular when Pemberton advertised the product in the Atlanta Journal May 29, 1886 issue. An average of about nine glasses were sold each day for the first year after the product’s release.

While Coca-Cola is often associated with the vintage depiction of the red-suited Santa Claus, the product’s first advertisements featured women dressed in smart clothes. In fact, one of the first endorsers of the drink is the beautiful Bostonian actress, Hilda Clark. Then, through the endorsement of various TV personalities and commercial models, Coca-Cola slowly began to be one of the world’s most popular soft drinks.

The Icon of Female Power

What is commonly known as the image of Rosie the Riveter is, in fact, Geraldine Doyle, a 1942 Michigan factory worker. The poster was designed by J. Howard Miller for the electric company, Westinghouse. Why the poster is often associated to Rosie the Riveter is because she stood as the motivating factor for women to work in place of the men fighting in the Second World War. Rosie the Riveter, known in real life as Rose Will Monroe, helped build US bombers B-29 and B-24.

Rosie the Riveter was a character for propagandas calling out to women to support the US government during the war. The song written by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb and entitled “Rosie the Riveter” also accompanied the appearances of Rosie in promotional shows.

The impact on American women of the image of Rosie the Riveter was tremendous. By the year 1944, the number of women who went out to work went up to more than 50%. Although the working conditions were not ideal for many women and while their salaries fell lower than the men’s, the Rosies still persevered in their jobs just to help their husbands, sons and lovers fighting in the war. In the end, Rosie the Riveter paved the way for more women to be accepted in various jobs.

Popeye Forever

Who doesn’t love watching the Adventures of Popeye? This famous caricature and character of a sailor is a classic example of the morally upright person who also knows how to defend himself when aggression pushes his patience to the limit. Often thought of as a characterization of the US nation, Popeye became one of the symbols of patriotism during the 1930s.

Popeye is the brain child of Elzie Crisler Segar who created the Thimble Theatre comic strip for the print syndication company, King Features. When Popeye came out ten years after the first publication of Thimble Theatre, he became a well-loved comic strip character and marked Segar’s success. In fact, even after the death of Segar, a number of other artists continued to draw and print Popeye comic strips for the public.

One influence to Popeye’s character is said to be a man whom Segar knew. The man’s name is Frank Fiegel and is shortened to “Rocky.” He often used his fists for various activities, never married, and died at age 79.

Another influence to Popeye’s character is the American individualism. Popeye is famous for the line, “I yam what I yam, and that’s all that I yam,” that clearly expresses the nation’s social perspective.

About the Adventures of Popeye Poster
The vintage art poster shows Popeye in five different stances. All of the images depict Popeye in action as if he had just swallowed his power food–the spinach. In addition, the images on the poster are rendered in dark blue ink against a background of olive green.

Recommendation

Phantom of the Opera: More Scary as Silent?

If there is one movie adaptation of the Phantom of the Opera that has made viewers faint in horror, it’s the 1925 silent film version. It has made so many women faint after seeing the Phantom’s face to the point that theaters owners were urged to have smelling salts ready in case these are necessary. See, just because a film has no dialogues doesn’t mean that it cannot have a maximum horrifying effect.

The 1925 Phantom of the Opera movie is a classic Universal Studios creation. It gained popularity not just because it made a whopping two million US dollars but also because the first two versions were a flop. The low ratings for the first version was speculated as caused by the unpleasant relationship between director Rupert Julian and the starring Phantom, Lon Chaney. The second and longer version, on the other hand, failed to improve the first and was even said to be dragging.

But finally, limited to just nine reels, the final version was made simpler than the second by Universal Studio’s Lois Weber and Maurice Pivar. The movie was played in New York’s Astor Theater in September 6, 1925 and in Hollywood in October 17, 1925. With better musical scores and a polished production, the silent Phantom of the Opera prompted further creations of various Universal Studios horror films including Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and The Mummy.

The Haunting Past as a Point of Progress

The 1933 King Kong movie has a theme wherein the forgotten past is no match for the future.
Symbolically, the forgotten past is depicted in the character of Kong, the pre-historic ape found in an unchartered island near Indonesia. Kong is brought to New York City by the fictitious film maker Carl Denham so he could be richer but Kong eventually wreaks havoc in the city as unintentionally prompted by Ann Darrow, Kong’s love interest. In the end Kong dies through the strong blows of military aircraft machine guns.

The 1933 King Kong movie may be considered as one of the many films with a then-common theme of people discovering islands inhabited by pre-historic creatures. Despite such description, the story and the filming of King Kong proved to step up the progress in movie-making. King Kong is the first successful movie to animate a central character and the film’s special effects is the inspiration or foundation of modern CGI animation.

The 1933 King Kong movie is also popular for its success in using a thematic musical score. While a lot of silent films applied original scores of multiple themes, King Kong was made exceptional by the talent of the composer, Max Steiner.

Finally, what boosted the success of the 1933 King Kong movie is the characterization and portrayal of Ann Darrow, a poor girl who eventually became rich and popular through Kong and Denham. Ann Darrow was played by actress Fay Wray.

You can Run but You can’t Hide from the Big Brother

It was through George Orwell’s classic novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” that the character of Big Brother became popular. While none of the people in his totalitarian state has seen him, Big Brother is in constant watch of all the Oceania inhabitants. He watches his people through surveillance cameras and they are constantly reminded that “Big Brother is watching you.” Some speculate that Big Brother is a real person while others believe that he is just a persona created by the totalitarian party ruling the state.

Said to be taken from the advertisements of Bennett for educational correspondence courses during the Second World War, the character of Big Brother has become a powerful idea today. Many people refer to a person as “Big Brother” if he keeps a watchful eye on the people he wants to control. On the other hand, “Little Brother” is the term for any factor that discreetly threatens a person’s privacy. Little Brother may be in the form of social networking websites or camera phones.

As an entertainment subject, Big Brother is recognized as an international show that has a similar presentation as Orwell’s novel. Selected people are invited to live in a house–called Big Brother’s house–for a few months and they are to be watched by viewers 24/7. Cameras are hidden around the house so that most of the guests’ actions may be seen.

Little Women Grow Up Too

Everyone has his or her weaknesses to overcome. In the case of the four March girls in Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women,” their weaknesses are of vanity, bad temper, shyness, and selfishness. In the classic novel, the plot revolves around how four girls changed for the better, eventually.

One of the themes of “Little Women” is about a Pilgrim’s Progress. Each of the March girls is a pilgrim and they all have to progress through life by improving their behaviors. As devout and religious women, the March girls use the Bible–their mother’s Christmas gift–as a guide to life. On their own and through the individual experiences they have growing up, the girls bloomed into the women they wanted to become.

The story of the “Little Women” is based on the life of Louisa May Alcott. Alcott is characterized by the main character Josephine “Jo” March who is also a writer in the novel. Jo, struggling to overcome her bad temper, learns to do so in a symbolic manner by refusing to marry Laurie. Laurie is her next door neighbor and childhood friend who also has a similar weakness.

The Great Dictator and the Great Satire

There’s hardly any room in the world for oppression, dictatorship, and big heads. They may become very powerful but the natural desires of every human heart fight against megalomaniac tendencies. Just look at what happened to the famous dictator in history.

He was one of the most powerful, sure. He deserves that title. He was able to influence most of his nation to think in the way he did. Even today, his influence is still compelling for many of his believers. But everybody knows too much self-centered ideals can only take a person so far in his delusions. Now, the famous dictator is, to many, a big fool.

He is even an object of a satire–mocked, a laughing stock and the object of his own hate. He is the one person many people would love to turn their eyes from. He is also a person many people do not want to be like.

But cheers to him. He has managed to be the one of the greatest lessons the world will ever learn.

About The Dictator poster

The vintage art poster shows Charlie Chaplin as Hynkel a.k.a. Adolf Hitler. As the movie is a satire of Hitler’s regime, Hynkel poses awkwardly against what appears like the Nazi flag. He is dressed in a Nazi uniform but what should be the Nazi swastika is just two separate crosses. Hynkel also poses like he is delivering the speech or message that Charlie Chaplin wanted to tell the world during the times of the two World Wars.

Recommendation

The vintage art poster is an excellent gift to friends who are fans of the great comedian, Charlie Chaplin. The poster is also a thoughtful present to vintage art poster collectors or to those who enjoy satirical films.

On the other hand, The Dictator poster serves as a friendly reminder of a most familiar event in history and is ideal as a conversation starter and an interesting wall decor.
